The story so far
I was born in 1972 in Valence, France. After a baccalauréat in mathematics and physics in 1990, I studied computer science at INSA Lyon, with an exchange year at McGill University in Montreal in 1993-1994, and graduated as an engineer in 1995. I have done one thing since: write software, first for handheld organizers, then for phones, browsers and servers.
1997-2009: Smartcode, then Palm
I started at Smartcode Technologie, a thirty people company, as a C/C++ engineer on telecommunication (IP/RAS), security (Setref) and smart card (Gemplus, the French VITALE health card) applications. I became a project lead on Windows CE, then the manager of the Applications team (six people): HandMail, HandWeb, HandMinitel, HandPhone and HandWAP, the mail client, the web browser, the Minitel, the phone and the WAP browser on Palm OS and Windows CE.
In 1999, Palm Computing Europe gave me its Applications team (eight people): the communication apps built into Palm OS, SMS, dialer, serial communication, internet and telephony, shipped to six million users. From 2001 to 2003 I moved to PalmOne in Sunnyvale, California, as the project lead of the Zire 71 PDA, the technical owner of all its software and of its integration. Back in France, I kept working remotely for Palm France until 2009: phone and organizer applications, then components of the new operating system, from native Linux to Java and JavaScript, up to webOS.
Those twelve years taught me embedded software, daily work with an American team, and shipping products used by millions of people.
2009-2015: Tekartik, the early years
In 2009 I created Tekartik to work as a freelancer from the Gard. I developed as a subcontractor, remote or on site, for French companies (Mobisystème, Aerocom) and a Swiss one (InZair): an SMS-like messaging app (ZMS), the Bluetooth management of a kid's watch (Octopus), a time management app (Zime), and for Audience in North America. Android in Java, Google App Engine in Java, the web in JavaScript and HTML, iOS in Objective-C.
Meanwhile I published my first apps: Tekachords and Basichords, chord dictionaries for iPhone, Android and the web, Tekabeat and Basitempo, and I built WordPress sites for local associations. That is also when I adopted Dart, as early as 2013-2014: idb_shim and sembast, my first two libraries, date from 2014.
2015-2020: Dart, Flutter and Firebase
With Flutter, Dart became my single language, from mobile to server. In 2017 I wrote sqflite, the SQLite plugin of Flutter, which became the most used database plugin of the ecosystem. Around it I published what I was missing: sembast for a NoSQL store, synchronized for asynchronous locks, process_run to run processes and portable scripts, fs_shim for a file system that also works in the browser, and an abstraction layer over Firebase (auth, Firestore, Storage, Functions) implemented for the browser, the VM, Node, Flutter, the REST API and the admin SDK, with in-memory implementations for tests.
On the client side, Flutter apps and Firebase, Firestore and Cloud Functions solutions for French companies (Inventhys, Schneider, Clinident) and a Swiss one (Blue Infinity), and in 2020 the first festival web apps: one per edition, built as static sites, still working years later.
2020-2026: apps and platforms
Since 2020 my references have been connected and business apps:
- Hublot: the Wear OS and Android apps of the connected watch, with live football match data, and their backend in Java and Dart served in Europe and in China (Google Cloud and Aliyun); an internal stock management Android app, in Flutter.
- Novostable (Novosenso): horses followed in their stable boxes through live HLS video, on iOS and Android, with its REST API and data sync.
- Aisprid, through Kickmaker: the Flutter web apps of the robots that remove the leaves of tomato plants in greenhouses, brought to Android and iOS with push notifications, the operators' app and the customers' app merged into one repository.
- A2K Technologies, the Montpellier event technology company: the Flutter apps of its brand activations since 2022. Quizzes with buzzers, karaoke, video capture, a DJ booth driven by a Hercules controller for Coca-Cola; a photo booth with face swap for JD Sports; event booking for Costa Coffee; an in-store scavenger hunt on locked devices for Decathlon × Disneyland; and the giant quiz on Place de la Concorde for the 2023 Rugby World Cup and the 2024 Olympic Games, played from a QR code, with its host controller and its big screen.
- SNUDI-FO: memberships and online payment with Stripe for a teachers' union.
- The festival apps: Trad'Hivernales 2020, 2021 and 2022 and Ciné Jazz à la Tour 2021 in Sommières, Cafés littéraires 2020 in Montélimar, Watt the Funk 2023 in Bessèges and its travel survey, and in 2026 Festen Orga, the back office of a festival organisation: artists, volunteers, meals, nights, shifts and locations, linked to the program.
These projects rest on a platform I have built over the years, festenao: a CMS, offline sync, Cloud Functions in Dart, Firestore rules written as code, and base apps (admin, dashboard, audience) the new apps derive from. On top of it, a family of free apps, youpi.app: Chordelio for chords, Buzzerelio for quiz nights, Sondelio to pick a date, Playelio for karaoke playlists, and others (PliCount, Prêt Track, QR codelio...). In 2026 I also rebuilt my sites with jaspr, the Dart web framework (tekartik.com, youpi.app, the band sites), and made AI-assisted development with Claude Code a daily practice: specifications, reviews, a skill documenting each package.
Open source
All this work leaves a public trace: about a hundred repositories on github.com/tekartik, over 4,600 stars, and 21 packages published under the tekartik.com publisher on pub.dev, 8,400 likes and 23 million downloads a month (as of 25 October 2026). The main ones:
- sqflite (2017), SQLite for Flutter on iOS, Android, macOS, desktop and the web: 3,000 stars, 5,500 likes, over 3 million downloads a month.
- sembast (2014), a NoSQL persistent store for Dart and Flutter.
- synchronized (2016), locks for asynchronous code, 5 million downloads a month.
- process_run (2015), process execution and a portable shell.
- idb_shim (2014) and its simple layer sdb, the IndexedDB API everywhere; idb_sqflite; fs_shim (2015), the portable file system.
- The Firebase and Firestore abstractions, offline sync (tekaly), the festenao platform, build, test and CI tools (dev_test, dev_build, ci.dart), a pure Dart port of Tone.js, a pure Dart WebP codec. Close to 300 documented packages in all.
